Conference Site
TVPPA’s 2009 Annual Conference is at the beautiful, historic Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains with 512 guest rooms, this hotel is known for its commitment to quality and service. In 1973 the contemporary wings of the hotel were added, and in 1988 a period of intensive renovation and expansion occurred, culminating in the creation of a $42 million Spa, recognized as one of America’s best.
Though George Washington didn’t sleep here, a lot of other celebrities have, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Harry Houdini, Will Rogers, George Gershwin, Thomas Edison, Eleanor Roosevelt and Henry Ford, not to mention eight presidents from Woodrow Wilson to George Bush.
In the recent poll of Southern Living magazine readers’ “top ten travel choices,” Grove Park Inn earned number-one hotel, besting properties like Opryland, Disney’s Grand Floridian, Beau Rivage and The Peabody. For “best weekend getaway,” readers rated Asheville, NC, number-two, ahead of places like Charleston, Savannah, New Orleans and Atlanta.

The Focus Of This Year's Meeting
TVPPA’s Chairman of the Board, Roy G. (Joe) Satterfield, will communicate the focus of this year’s agenda and the rationale for it. He is Manager of Blue Ridge Mountain Electric Membership Corporation, based in Young Harris, Georgia. The cooperative’s service area includes Clay and Cherokee counties in North Carolina.

Leadership Demystified
A New York Times writer hailed our keynote speaker as “a modern day Will Rogers who has quietly become one of the most influential people in America.” Andy Andrews has spoken before four different U.S. Presidents. His book, The Traveler’s Gift: Seven Decisions that Determine Personal Success, is an international sensation, remaining on the New York Times bestseller list for 17 weeks and translated into 20 languages. In a groundbreaking two-hour special on PBS television, Andy shared new insights into the powerful principles conveyed in The Travelers Gift.

Expectations Of New Congress,
Obama Administration
We have a new President, a new administration, and a new Congress is in session. Deborah Sliz, TVPPA’s Washington representative, will reveal what she’s seeing and hearing on the hill, and implications it may have for energy policy and power distribution utilities. Deborah is President & CEO of Morgan Meguire.

Impact Of Electric Transportation
On Distribution Utilities
“The plug-ins are coming, the plug-ins are coming,” shouts Paul Revere VIII from his hybrid vehicle. While the source is fictional, the warning is real. During 2010 Nissan, for one, will introduce its first plug-in electric vehicle for consumer use. The news generates a host of questions and concerns for power distribution utilities. This session is intended to provide some answers. Presenters include James Ellis, left, TVA Program Manager, Electric Transportation Technologies, Mark Duvall, center, EPRI’s Director of Electric Transportation, and Mark Perry, right, Director of Product Planning and Strategy for Nissan Americas. TVPPA Steering Committee's
Five Areas Of Focus
In 2008 the TVPPA Board established a steering committee, chaired by the Association’s immediate past chairman. Since the initial meeting in July, this group has developed guiding principles and five areas of focus for TVPPA’s future success. Committee Chairman Eston Glover, President & CEO of Pennyrile Rural Electric Cooperative Corporation, will provide an overview and brief report.

Perspective on Public Power’s Future
Our speaker was named President & CEO of the American Public Power Association (APPA) in January 2008. Prior to joining APPA, Mark Crisson spent 30 years at Tacoma, WA, Public Utilities, serving 14 years as CEO/Director. In 1997, Tacoma Power spearheaded Click! Network, currently the nation’s largest municipally-owned telecommunications system. (Download Presentation)

Inspiring People To Take Action
Our speaker has been exceeding audience expectations for hundreds of companies over the past 17 years. Before going solo, Chip Eichelberger worked with Tony Robbins for six years as his international point man, giving more than 1,300 talks on three continents and in eight countries. Chip spends time researching our industry and conducting phone interviews so that his presentation is truly customized. Previous clients rave about Chip’s enthusiasm, high energy, humor, spontaneity, and his creating an interactive experience for attendees instead of a “one-way” keynote. The effects of his talks are long-lasting.

Technology Solutions For
Today's Energy Challenges
These are exciting times in the energy business. We’ve asked Ron Holcomb, CEO of PES Energize, Pulaski, TN, and Chairman of TVPPA’s newly formed Technology Applications Committee, to share his perspective on energy efficiency, demand response initiatives, and the role for technology. Added to the mix is the emphasis Washington is placing on smart grid technology. Ron will discuss increasing pressure he feels is coming for implementation of load management mechanisms in the Tennessee Valley. (Download Presentation)

Seven States Power Corporation: Next Steps
During fall 2008, Seven States Power Corporation (7SPC) acquired 70 percent ownership of a combined cycle power generation plant in Southaven, MS, and is seeking financing for another 20 percent. Building equity in Valley generating assets was quite an accomplishment, but lots more “behind-the-scenes” work must be completed between now and April 2010. Jack Simmons, 7SPC President & CEO, will provide an update on these next steps.

The Challenges We Face Together
TVA President & CEO Tom Kilgore closes our conference with an update on the power system. He’ll also share his perspective on the future of our industry and the joint efforts of TVA and TVPPA-member utilities that will be required to meet tomorrow’s challenges. (Download Presentation)
