As of the close of business March 31, Johnson City, TN, Power Board became an energy authority.

The utility announced that it would continue to operate under the name “Johnson City Power Board” for the next several months, during which time the utility’s leadership will craft a new name and brand.

Johnson City PB CEO Jeff Dykes told TVPPA News magazine earlier this year that one big reason for the move is that an independent Johnson City energy authority, no longer tied directly to that city’s government, could move far more nimbly in its ability to make and act on decisions.

“Our business today is transitioning so fast,” Dykes said. “You need to be able to react quickly when things change. Getting bonds for a substation, for instance, can take a couple of months or more. Being an authority makes that better, which is better for our customers.”
