Per tradition, TVPPA Conferences is once more starting a new year by lawyering up.

The 2018 TVPPA Legal Conference is set for Feb. 8-9 at the Marriott Cool Springs in Franklin, TN. Registration and more information is available now at

Scott Hendrix, the attorney at Tombigbee EPA, Tupelo, MS, is scheduled to preside at the conference. Two CEOs – TVPPA’s Doug Peters and Sue Kelly of the American Public Power Association – are among the first three scheduled presenters.

“When it comes to the legal aspects of our industry, getting it wrong is not an option,” said TVPPA Conferences Director Tim Daugherty. “This agenda is full of presentations on issues our members, and their attorneys, are wrestling with right this minute.”

Among the scheduled presenters:

• TVPPA Washington Representative Elizabeth Whitney on what’s happening as the nation’s capital heads into the second year of the Trump administration;

• Scott Friedman of the Chicago-based Cinnamon Mueller firm on federal regulatory issues on the FCC’s regulatory agenda, including net neutrality and retransmission consent;

• Antonio Carroll of Nashville, TN, ES; David DiBiase of Chattanooga, TN, EPB, Denise Miller of Middle Tennessee EMC, Murfreesboro, TN, and TVA Associate General Counsel Jared Mitchum on local power company (LPC) distribution networks and ‘behind-the-meter’ resources;

• Miller & Martin attorneys Karen Smith (wage/hour compliance), Stacie Caraway (labor/employment law) and Mark Smith (pole attachments).

The agenda also includes a scheduled presentation on cyber security from Kevin Jones and Paul Tiao of Richmond, VA-based Hunton & Williams.

“Public power’s provision of an essential service to an entire community or region makes utilities prime targets for espionage and ransom,” said TVPPA General Counsel Carlos Smith. “Kevin and Paul will present an overview of the pitfalls and the sequence of responses if your utility is attacked.”

As in past years, the Legal Conference will be conducted immediately following the Feb. 7 TVPPA All-Member meeting, at the same location. Please note that registration for the All-Member meeting and registration for the Legal Conference are separate events; Legal Conference registration is available at
