Job Statement: Under limited supervision, applies established engineering concepts and principles to design, construct and maintain gas, water or electric systems. Handles moderate/complex work assignments. Provides guidance and instruction to junior engineers, aides, assistants and drafters. Establishes system specifications, evaluates new products and makes recommendations to management regarding system improvements.

Essential Duties
1. Plans for present and future requirements of utility system; prepares cost estimates and keeps manager/supervisor informed of the requirements.
2. Prepares specifications and cost analyses for new equipment and participates in start-up of new equipment and systems, which may include checkout simulation, testing, and training of personnel, developing operation and maintenance guidelines and procedures and conducting initial performance tests.
3. Prepares routine and special work orders. Evaluates bid tabulations, makes purchasing recommendations, inspects special materials and prepares complete, independent requisitions.
4. Handles commercial, industrial and residential inquiries and responds appropriately by drafting correspondence, meeting with individuals, making phone calls, etc.
5. Keeps abreast of new methods, new developments in the industry and engineering standards.
6. Participates in management of projects, which may call for frequent contact with those inside and outside the company; can require tact, diplomacy and good interpersonal skills.
7. Coordinates work with other departments and outside agencies as necessary and takes initiative to resolve problems.
8. Monitors and controls costs. Prepares/revises estimates, schedules and authorizations.
9. Evaluates contractor bids and performance through inspection of work to assure adherence to specifications.
10. Uses and develops computer programs for engineering analysis and facilities management. Work may involve data collection, entry and documentation.
11. May oversee and direct the work of others. Provides guidance and instruction to subordinate personnel as required.
12. Other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements
Education/Training/Certifications: BS degree in applicable engineering discipline required (emphasis in power engineering studies preferred). Professional Engineer (P.E.) or Engineer Intern (EI) certification preferred.
Experience/Skills: Four years of progressive responsibility within utility or related industry using integrated business, design and mapping systems (SAP and Bentley preferred).
Operation of Equipment: Calculator, proficiency with personal computer (MS Work, Excel, Outlook), telephone and vehicle.
Physical Demands/Environmental Conditions: Primarily sedentary office work, some exposure to inclement weather for field checks or emergencies.
Other: Good written/oral/interpersonal skills. Subject to call out after normal working hours. Must have a current driver’s license.


1. Applies power-engineering theory and concepts to design, program and test distribution protection systems. For substations, knowledge of substation equipment, testing, maintenance, and fault currents required.

2. Makes load and line studies by analyzing system performance, both present and projected, using load forecasts, load flow studies, short circuit studies, conductor and device loading studies, voltage profile studies, coordination studies and other analyses as required. Based on study results, uses sound engineering judgment and economics to make recommendations.

3. Knowledge of and NESC compliance requirements and Synergi Electric modeling software desired

4. Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering is required. M.S.E.E. (power systems) will be considered.

1. Knowledge of gas gate station and regulator equipment design, operation, and maintenance desired. Knowledge of USDOT and ALPSC compliance requirements, including cathodic protection of pipelines and services desired. GasWorks, or equivalent, gas modeling software experience desired.

2. Bachelor degree in Civil and/or Mechanical Engineering is required.

1. Knowledge of water distribution and transmission system design, equipment, operation, and maintenance desired. Knowledge of ADEM compliance requirements public water systems desired. WaterGEMS, or equivalent, water modeling software experience desired.

2. Bachelor degree in Civil and/or Mechanical Engineering is required.
