Description/Job Summary:
Bowling Green Municipal Utilities (BGMU) offers a comprehensive benefits package to full-time employees that includes health, dental, life, LTD, paid holidays, leave benefits and a retirement plan. The Engineering Technician coordinates the planning, design and construction of new electrical projects of a semi-technical nature between electrical contractors, developers, and BGMU’s construction line crews. Essential duties include:

  • Designs and plans complex electric distribution systems using established guidelines and engineering practices.
  • Works with customers or contractors to effectively prepare construction drawings, cost estimates, power contracts, easements and other documents for implementing construction of the project.
  • Designs street lighting systems and makes recommendations on security lights.
  • Stakes pole lines and conduit routing providing proper field sketch for drawing work order prints.
  • Performs field inspections as required.
  • Maintains project data files for the duration of the construction project.
  • Must be available for periodic after hours standby.
  • Assists with other engineering projects as requested by supervisors or management.
  • Additional work and/or training outside normal work hours may be required.

The position requires a working knowledge of surveying, GPS technology, engineering graphics, basic and intermediate electrical theory and mathematics, safety rules and practices, various codes and regulations, and electric utility materials, equipment and methods. The ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, related plans and construction specifications is required. This individual must be competent with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Outlook. Quality service to internal and external customers is essential, so the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, line crews, contractors, developers, and management is crucial.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school degree or graduate equivalency.
  • Some college or vocational training and/or work experience in surveying or electric line design and/or electric line construction.
  • Warren County, KY residency within six (6) months of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:
Associate’s degree in engineering technology or Bachelor’s degree in electric engineering.
