L-R: Fowler, Kimbell, McCullars, Scott

TVPPA members Clay Fowler of Florence Utilities, Mark Kimbell of Gallatin Department of Electricity and Ronnie McCullars of Albertville MUB teamed up with TVA’s Thomas Scott to win the 25th Annual Power Play Golf Tournament, played Sept. 28 in Muscle Shoals, Ala. The foursome combined for an 11-under-par score at The Shoals Schoolmaster Course, earning them the Johnny Hayes Cup trophy. The victors were only one shot clear of two additional teams playing in the tournament, making this year’s event highly competitive.

The biggest winners though are the high school seniors who will win college scholarships funded, in part, by the tournament. Thirty scholarships, valued at $4,000 each, will be awarded in Spring 2021. Scholarship recipients must be children or dependents of participating local power company employees.

Tournament officials said more than 80 players turned out for the annual event, which was founded by former TVA Board Director Johnny Hayes in partnership with local power companies to help raise funds for Power Play Association scholarships. Hayes served on the TVA board from 1993 through 1999.

“This scholarship program is a shining example of how local power companies and TVA work together to benefit the Valley. The program’s success is the result of multiple parties’ involvement, including local power companies, TVPPA and Valley associations, vendors and TVA,” said Dan Pratt, vice president of Customer Delivery.

The Power Play program has awarded 638 scholarships totaling approximately $2.5 million. Funds for the program are raised through Association membership fees, contributions from TVA and vendors, and funds raised through the annual event.
