Distribution Engineer I
Jackson Purchase Energy Cooperative (JPEC) is seeking a Distribution Engineer to join our team. Ideal candidates must have strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to assist with the cooperatives’ power system planning and applications engineering functions including work plans, system improvement plans, integration, dispatching, SCADA, communications infrastructure, data analysis, distribution automation, distributed energy resource programs, and field and technical engineering services.
A Distribution Engineer will be moderately directed and supervised while performing the following duties and responsibilities:
Assists in the planning, preparation, and implementation of various systems analysis and planning studies. Assists in developing and implementing construction specifications and procedures. Aids in preparing engineering drawings and staking for subdivision layouts, state highway jobs, mapping records, and other projects as assigned. Works with various tools, such as outage management systems, supervisory control and data acquisition systems, engineering analysis software, and different mapping systems to assist operations personnel in developing and maintaining a safe and reliable electric distribution system. Assists with sectionalizing studies and ensures proper system coordination. Works with JPEC operations supervisors, crews and contractors to complete projects in a safe and efficient manner. This may require time in the field or being out of the office. Works with JPEC members when they have questions or concerns. Works with staking personnel to design work orders that meet the needs of the member while following all JPEC policies and procedures. Assists in the development, implementation, and maintenance of various engineering and operation agreements. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.). Must acquire a thorough understanding of electric power distribution design, construction and operation. Must acquire a thorough knowledge of the National Electrical Safety Code, JPEC tariffs, policies and procedures, and Kentucky PSC rules and regulations. Must be able to work non-standard hours and/or extended hours beyond normal shift and during emergencies (e.g., evenings, weekends, holidays, etc.) in all weather conditions.
Approximately 60 – 70% of work is performed indoors. Ability to walk, stand for prolonged periods, and lift up to 50 pounds, occasionally over 50 pounds. Required to grip, grasp, feel, or twist using the hands, fingers, and/or wrists regularly. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Operates a computer keyboard and mouse daily. Must live within a 30-mile radius of JPEC headquarters, have a valid driver’s license, maintain good attendance/punctuality record, travel, and participate in designated training programs when necessary.
Education/Experience Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering required; electrical engineering preferred.
- Specialized training in electric utility systems design and operation preferred.
- Cooperative experience preferred.
