Lineman

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Constructs and repairs overhead and underground distribution lines.
  • Installs and repairs service lines for residential, commercial, and industrial customers according to applicable
    National Electric Safety Code (NESC) and electric construction standards.
  • Installs and repairs transformers.
  • Constructs and repairs 46kv sub-transmission lines.
  • Performs energized line work on 17 kv and below.
  • Operates and maintains specialized line construction and rigging equipment.
  • Uses specialized test equipment, such as voltmeters, ammeters, phasing meters and ohmmeters.
  • Reads and interprets blueprints, drawings and work orders.
  • Reads and interprets traffic control manuals referenced by Decatur Utilities.
  • Provides training and assistance to Apprentice Linemen and Crewmen to develop skills associated with line work with emphasis on safety and quality workmanship.
  • Communicates with customers and investigates trouble calls.
  • Assesses work situations to ensure that all safety policies and procedures are followed.
  • May occasionally be assigned lead responsibilities in absence of lead lineman.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This job has no supervisory responsibilities. May provide general scheduling and work direction in the absence of Lead Lineman and training assistance to Lineman Apprentices.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High School diploma or GED. Minimum 6-8 years related work experience in electric utility (4 years as Lineman Apprentice).

COMMUNICATION SKILLS
Ability to read, interpret, comprehend and follow documents such as safety rules, National Electric Code, National Electric Safety Code, operating and maintenance instructions, drawings and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to interact and effectively communicate with customers, co-workers, supervisors.

COMPUTER SKILLS
Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite (Microsoft Outlook, Word & Excel) as required to perform job tasks. This includes using software applications for email and online training modules and using Internet Explorer to navigate online Employee Self Serve webpage for personal payroll, benefit and employee information.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to solve high school level mathematical problems using mathematical concepts such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, units of length, volume, weight measurement and distance and apply to practical business situations. Ability to use and apply basic electric formulas.

REASONING/COMPLEXITY
Ability to apply substantial judgment and analytic ability, such as performing somewhat complex calculations, following detailed instructions, solving moderate problems or performing specialized repairs; ability to set-up, operate and maintain specialized equipment; ability to comprehend and practice National Electric Safety Codes and other applicable standards.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Regularly required to stoop, bend, kneel, and stand for extended periods of time; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb ladders and balance; and talk or hear. Must regularly lift and/or move line tools, equipment and materials up 50 pounds. Must have skills and agility to climb poles and climb in and out of bucket truck on a regular basis.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Regularly works around electricity, energized equipment, moving mechanical parts, high precarious places and some hazardous chemicals. Regularly exposed to outside weather conditions, including wet and/or humid conditions, extreme cold and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to risk of electrical shock and arc flash. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, TRAINING
Valid Alabama Driver’s License with Class A CDL; approved Journey Lineworker Certification; CPR/First Aid Certification; Customer Service Skills and applicable safety training.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Available to work scheduled and unscheduled times to accommodate customer demands and emergency situations, including evenings, weekends and holidays; must have extensive knowledge of DU service territory, lines, voltages and street names; show flexibility to work effectively with different crew members and change crews as needed to accomplish construction work group goals; willing to attend apprentice training and complete any correspondence work assigned; subject to random DOT drug and alcohol testing and driver’s license checks according to DU policies; wear DU provided uniforms and maintain neat and clean appearance for meeting public; display strong commitment to safe work habits; and subject to call duty rotation and emergency call out.
