This class has been updated in 2024 and will introduce you to the work order system and how it operates in a utility. Special emphasis in explaining how to account for Meters & Transformers is a big part of this class. This course is encouraged for all utility employees in order for them to gain a better understanding of co-worker`s responsibilities and a work overview of the entire process. This class will take you through a manual work order closing step by step. It would be preferable but not required to have completed the Utility Accounts Classification & Principles class to enroll. This advanced course on Underground Distribution Design covers topics of engineering and design that are beyond the scope of the PLDS core series yet necessary for proper design, planning and management of larger URD projects. Students will learn, not only the ``how`` of looped and radial underground layout but, also, the ``why`` for both 200 amp and 600 amp circuits. Building on concepts learned in the core series, this course will illustrate how to determine maximum cable run length, pulling tension, jam ratios, conductor capacity, proper pad placement and thermal limitations for conduits and risers. Students who complete the course will have a firm grasp on the big picture of how URD systems are constructed, maintained and operated to ensure safe and reliable service for the effective life of the components. The certification test for this course will be given online the week following in-class instruction.

The class will focus on the latest changes in the law including updates on wage and hour litigation, the preservation of documents and other evidence in liability lawsuits, and employment law. The class will also focus on the essentials elements contained in good contracts, how to read a contract and to review other aspects of business management that impact LPCs every day.

This course provides guidance on managing asbestos-containing materials (ACM) in electric utility facilities and field environments. It covers identifying ACM in vaults, conduits, and older structures, performing small-scale abatement projects safely, and complying with EPA NESHAP, OSHA, and DOT regulations for packaging, manifesting, shipping, and contractor oversight under Asbestos Operations and Maintenance (O&M) Class III requirements. This course also equips participants with tools and techniques to prepare for environmental regulatory inspections by state and federal agencies. It emphasizes the use of compliance calendars, training matrices, and legal registers to demonstrate ongoing compliance.

Provides needed hands-on problem solving training through the study and analysis of miniature transformers. This 6 day class is an intense workshop designed to help potential Lineman Apprentice experience the everyday demands they will be expected to handle on the job. You will have the opportunity to learn various aspects of line work, with an emphasis in climbing. Individual sessions focus on the hazards of electricity, grounding, rigging, hand lines, aluminum and copper ties. You will be placed on call at night to become adapt to working at all hours of the day. You will have the chance to test your knowledge through homework and test. At the end of the week your manager will be given a written assessment of potential to perform work under stress and your capacity to learn and follow instructions. This class is a great tool for managers to use to determine the potential apprentice’s skills and abilities. They will be asked to complete an apprentice packet before coming to class that includes student information.

This 3-day lab is designed to ready students for troubleshooting fiber after splicing is completed. Students will learn to use an OTDR to test and troubleshoot fiber when issues arise. This lab will teach students how to read an OTDR to find faults along the fiber path and determine the distance of an issue when a cut occurs. Students will also learn about the Outside Plant Installation process as well.

This 1 day course covers transportation maintenance and mechanical inspection programs; Commercial Drivers License requirements and applicability; substance abuse screening; motor carrier regulations; safety measures to reduce the occurrence of accidents; accident investigations; and resources available to assist safety coordinators in their transportation safety efforts.

Participants in this course will be using the class information to practice accident investigation (Hands-on). They will also review electric utility fatality cases and conduct fact finding based on the information provided. Supervisor responsibilities and liabilities will be reviewed, as they relate to employees, contract employees and public injuries. The information provided should prepare the participants to form an accident investigation committee, conduct investigations, determine the facts and recommend corrective actions to prevent a reoccurrence.

Every day, you are called upon to make important decisions. Poor choices can lead to death or serious bodily harm. Bad decisions can have major service impacts, interfere with your effectiveness and influence customer support for your business. These decisions are frequently made under conditions of stress, hazard or fatigue. Many times, these decisions must be made in uncertain, fast moving or ill-defined circumstances. We call a decision that potentially affects our well-being or that of others and made under intense pressure a critical decision. The National Safety Council (NSC) reports that 44 linemen died in work- related incidents in 2013. Compare this with the FBI’s report that 49 police officers died due to noncriminal causes in the same period. The similarities are interesting. The NSC reports that many incidents occur during routine tasks because workers become too comfortable and complacent. Recognizing the importance of proper mindset, more utility companies are interviewing candidates based on attitude and mental aptitude, not necessarily on specified skill sets that can be developed later through training. This bears a striking similarity to recent trends in law enforcement hiring practices. Understanding the above, we must ask ourselves: is there a way to improve our ability to make critical decisions? In this program, you will be provided with some useful tools to improve your ability to make the sort of critical decisions you`re faced with every day of your career working in the public utility industry.

This will allow them to be more effective leaders and supervisors as well as help them understand their role and responsibilities of their job within the utility. The three-track series will cover topics for the new line-foreman to the experienced line-foreman. Subject areas include leadership, safety, technical and management skills. Individuals attending the Academy will receive a certificate for each class completed as well as an overall certificate for the week. Track 3 addresses interpersonal and communication skills, line staking and accident investigation and emergency communication. The online DISC profile completed for Track II will be used during this class.

To answer these questions, we must answer another: Are we in our respective roles to maintain or to continuously improve, grow and meet the challenges ahead? This 3-day lab will teach students the installation process of running fiber into a home or business. Students will also learn about different ONTs and systems they might use to assist with installation of fiber as well as troubleshooting. This lab will transition to the final exam that students will take after the final parts of the class are covered.

The purpose of this training is to insure the safe and responsible operation of a Digger Derrick truck. With this training the intended outcome is for all those that are using these devices acquire the knowledge and skills to operate the equipment safely and productively.

In the final Level 4 course, students focus on line design efficiency, reliability and the aging power infrastructure. Students learn about mechanical loading for multi-circuits, learn about commercial load sizing and the process of calculating loads on manufactured products. Students review the NESC and learn when and how to apply Rule 250 C and D. Classroom discussion includes a brief look at how local requirements and/or RUS standards and bulletins incorporate (and compare to) NESC rules. System protection and balance includes equipment descriptions and purpose, and an overview of smart grid and distribution automation, storm preparation (hardening of the system) and recovery (getting the system back operational). Course manual provided. Final exam. Certificate of successful completion.

TVPPA`s Meter Lab B Starts with a short review of the basic concepts of electricity. Those concepts play an essential role in understanding our electrical system and how to meter it. We also do a quick refresher of common math used in metering. In the Meter Lab B, some of the math focuses on CT sizing and an introduction to vector addition. All of the math is covered with handouts and worksheets to aid in understanding and retention. High bill investigations and techniques are cover as needed depending on the participants. Other items covered in B lab include load estimation, common electrical equipment, usage costs, etc. Meter lab B is designed to quickly cover many of the concepts introduced in Lab A and transition into more complex metering situations. Ample time will be spent exploring meter forms and uses. During this portion of the Lab, we will also discuss common mistakes of metering and demonstrate some of them during one of several hands-on activities. We will demonstrate and discuss meter installation safety and voltage checks to promote safe work practices in metering. Advanced meter testing and troubleshooting is a large part of Meter Lab B. During the testing and trouble-shooting portion of this lab we will look at some of the more confusing vector diagrams. Meter site inspections and procedures are also an important part of the lab as they go hand in hand with testing and safety. TVPPA’s meter lab B is not a sit and listen lab. Various hands-on activities, worksheets, and group activities break up the week`s lecture portions and help to re-enforce the presentation topics. The author of the text and course instructor is Ernie Bowles, a 40+ year veteran electrical engineer who spent his utility career at Clinton Utilities Board (CUB) performing engineering analysis, overseeing the utility’s E&O Department, and providing managerial leadership. Ernie is now the owner and principal of EB Consulting founded in 2019, and where he provides various professional engineering consulting services to utilities, industries, and other consulting firms. As well as personnel practices including Management/Supervision and behavior, employee selection, job analysis, effective staffing, training and development, compensation management, employee appraisals, employment law, case studies. Current issues such as federal regulations, sexual harassment, wellness, and drug testing will also be covered. Trends in utility personnel management are also examined.

Safety is of utmost importance and, for this reason, all four levels of the Line Design and Staking program have a heavy emphasis on safety. This 5 day class addresses the principles and methods for analyzing distribution circuits operating under sinusoidal steady state conditions. While an understanding of time differentiation is helpful it is shown that, in steady state, the circuit equations to be solved are algebraic; although the algebra is that of complex numbers. Complex numbers and their use as phaser`s representing sinusoidal time signals is thoroughly explained. The terminal characteristics of resistors, inductors, capacitors and independent sources are explained in the phaser domain. Electric power in ac circuits is far more interesting than in dc circuits where power is simply constant depending on voltage and current level. For ac circuits power concepts include real power, reactive power, complex power, apparent power, power factor angle, and power factor. All of the concepts are defined and demonstrated. The course includes basic principles of circuit analysis including mesh current and node voltage methods. Additional topics include The venin and Norton`s theorems for circuit simplification, power factor correction, per unit notation and calculations, single phase and three phase systems, wye-delta conversions, voltage drop calculations, and short circuit calculations under balanced conditions. Approximately two thirds of the course time is spent on theoretical concepts and one third on solving illustrative problems. This course will allow distribution engineers from all backgrounds to pursue the more advanced topics in the remaining courses.
