Position: Lineman/lineman apprentice (position will be assigned for needed division construction or substation maintenance)

Classification: Classified, non-exempt.

Salary Range: Apprentice: Grade 7, $15.67/hr—$21.11/hr (will progress to Grade 8 and 9 with successful work and training). Lineman: Grade 10, $20.29/hr—$27.47/hr.

Progression Incentive Scale for Apprentices and Lineman: $1.50 to $6.00 per hour will be added to base pay noted above as employee progresses with completion of required probationary period, unit courses/years of service, and promotion to Lineman. See HR for full details.

Job Summary
Substation: Under the direction of the substation maintenance foreman, the employee is responsible for the scheduled maintenance and repair of all substation equipment. Responsible for the construction and/or reconstruction of substations. Responsible for substation operations. May be responsible for the tests, repair, installs, and inventories of meters used within the City of Athens electrical system. The employee maintains and services mechanical and solid state traffic signals. Employee assists with a wide variety of substation maintenance activities to include working as an electrician, a maintenance crew member, or perform metering responsibilities.

Construction: Provides all services necessary to construct and maintain an electrical power distribution system. The journeyman is qualified to perform all aspects of power line work without supervision and must know all aspects of subordinate positions. Under the direction of the line foreman, the incumbent performs skilled and technical work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of electrical power lines. Erects, maintains, and repairs wood poles and prefabricated light-duty metal towers, cable, and related equipment. Climbs poles or works out of bucket trucks to construct and maintain electric lines and equipment. Works with or near energized high-voltage lines and equipment; performs other duties as required.

Job Requirements (including, but not limited to the following)
Education, Licenses, and Certification: 18 years or older. High school diploma/GED or equivalent work experience. Valid Alabama driver’s license, Class B CDL or ability to obtain. Technical school degree with a concentration in electrical technology preferred; completion of TVPPA Lineman Apprentice Program preferred.

Work Experience/Knowledge: Completion of an electric apprenticeship with 1-3 years experience in construction and maintenance; however, any combination of education and experience that would indicate potential job success will be considered. Strong mathematical skills including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry to conduct basic electrical calculations, including power factor and phasing. Extensive knowledge in the methods, principles, and practices involved in testing, maintaining, repairing and operating high voltage transmission and distribution systems. Ability to complete TVPPA Substation Maintenance curriculum.

Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to effectively communicate technical information and other types of information to contractors, TVA engineers, management, company representatives, other department personnel, the public, linemen apprentices, and co-workers either by telephone, radio, or in person.

Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to deal with the general public and irate individuals with courtesy and respect and to get along well with supervisors and co-workers. Ability to function in sometimes adverse, stressful, and hazardous conditions. Ability to project a positive image of the work group, department, and city. Ability to make sound decisions, to perform complex tasks without close supervision, and to handle multiple priorities effectively.

Physical Requirements and General Abilities: Ability to drive. Ability to stand for long periods of time and to walk over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces. Ability to perform recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. Ability to perform recurring lifting of moderately heavy items. Ability to work non-standard hours, overtime, and weekends as needed. Ability to be on-call as required. Ability to travel overnight and attend training as needed.
